This past week I have noticed that reviews make such a huge difference in the material that you choose to read. I have noticed by focusing more on the reviews of authors works how interested I would be in the essay. In reading The Best American Essays of 2011, I read the reviews after I read the essays and I noticed that some of the essays that I read I could have easily skipped over just by reading the reviews. The essays that I read that I felt strongly about had reviews that were very positive and as I read the reviews made me feel the exact same way. The essays that it was very hard for me to keep an interest in, had reviews that are the same way as well. If I had read the reviews ahead of time, then I feel that I would not have wasted my time on reading the essays.

After reading Chapter 18 “Writing About the Arts” it opened my eyes to realize that the arts are really all around us. Every day we engage in some form of art or another. I believe that every person interprets and expresses art in a different form every day of their lives. Whether it be from a writer’s perspective and they use different forms of writing to express that artistic ability. Usually with writing they express it through journalistic writing.
