Bb Collaborate Listening Session

Q. Will the login numbers continue to be lodged in VA, any interest in an 800 number?
No, and if ever it won’t come without a cost

Q. Difficulties with the assessment features?
Long answer, but one of the points is that all tools will come under one support unit — streamlining,

Q. Support in the evening and weekends is lacking. People get a “leave a message” notes, and the calls are not answered
We are experiencing trouble with the evening and weekend staff. Should feel frescalate.
aFollow-up: When we have a problem =now= we’re not getting help. Answer: same as above.
Me: How is this an acceptable answer? It doesn’t help our Art professor who needed — and didn’t get — immediate help.
Me: we have answer sheets for our staff, why don’t they?

Q: Get Rid of Java
A: Oh yeah, we know about the issue. They’ve asked the demo team and suggest that the developers have put that on the fast track

Q: Can I use the document camera in the whiteboard? — Not answered (because they concentrated on the first part of the question, above).

A; Students who are kicked off can’t get back on in good time
B: these might be network traffic issue, and you should look into network optimization, but we’ll look into it.

Had to leave early to prepare for my own session :-(

Keynote: Sagata Mitra

Sugata Mitra:
Polymath who conceived the Computer in a Wall concept (see link below)

Put up a computer and they will come

And they will learn

They taught themselves English so they could learn

Girls organized into female-only groups

Kids developed a pedagogy

The grandmother approach – praise

In England where he teaches he asked for volunteer grandmothers and got 200 volunteers in the first week. Now he has the Grandmother cloud!

‘They learn because I’m not there.”

The term – “self organized learning environments”

I was too wrapped up in the talk to take good notes, but these links convey more information than I ever could!

Corporate Keynote

Keywords: Choice – Innovation – Access

Bb supports multiple learning systems.

Support (such as it is) for all learning systems.

Integrating open education standards into products . . . theoretically?

Learning object repository (xplor): search, create and manage content. Can be accessed from anyone of the different learning standards – But we love Merlot?

Create Content within Xplor: pages, files, links, assmnts, assignments, discussion & ext. tools

Access to content partnerships by faculty in an easy to use way.
McGraw Hill Publisher; Pearson (My labs) My math labs serves 4.5 million (?) students/year; Wiley Plus; Cengage learning integration; Learning.com K-12; VitalSource (digital catalog)

Support keywords: Openness – Transparency – Quality

And the survey says:
All time highs in issue resolution, usability, quality

Enterprise course evaluation and surveys to be added to Learn w/out charge

Both text & text-to-voice notifications, 2-way (from course to phone and phone to course) messaging

Text delivery from courses available soon

Collaborate – improved integration with Learn

Announces Collaborate mobile for Fall, but I have the mobile app on my iPad right now . . . anyway, linked to grade center

Another Fall launch: Blackboard Social – best part is that it is not bound up within Bb but is really, apparently, Social! Shared out.
Social Learning

Blackboard Mobile — see my notes from the Mobile session, also in this blog

Making Bb Beautiful –

Filed under: Bb World 2013 — harrisr @ 6:20 pm

Weds Morning

Making Bb Beautiful –

Strayer U. Russ Bazydlo
russell.bazydlpo@strayer.edu

When he started the home tab was a mess, but he used Bb to make the site more clear and to brand it. Use the tab level to deliver most of the content

Their institution is different than many, in that much the rest of us use classes to deliver information There are no resources that teach this customization

Bb is a module-based system CSS Class Selectors Bb gives you the CSS, but there are 15,000 lines of code He created a single style sheet

Nested in in Theme.css => created

When you update it you need to zip the entire folder and load it We’d have to develop in the test system and it will take all semester for refinement and approval

Their central module points to an interactive story line

“div class=<CLASS selector>”

The interactive modules feature story lines and would require, at my school, cooperation with the video group of IRT.

They integrated w/ Skillsoft, nice to know buy not relevant to my school

Content Collection usage — all the document and graphics for any given area are stored in the content collection

A lot of people are using cell phones to take pictures of the slides, but I don’t see any of them taking notes.  After another dozen sessions how are they gong to make sense of all the graphics in the absence of context?

Bb World Mobile Keynote

Keywords:
Personal, easy, now

Mobile is Pervasive and mandatory

• 2005 – No mobile apps at the inauguration of the former pope
• 2012 – nothing but mobile apps at the inauguration of the current pope
• People check their devices 50 times a day
• Nomophobia – the fear of being out of mobile phone contact – this is real, and is compared with a dentist appointment or wedding day jitters. I think that the comparison of wd jitters and the dentist is the significant point!
• Smartphones – younger people have as many or more smartphones than older people who make a lot of money. And that is the future

Vid of baby trying to swipe a magazine page – she learned swiping and wants to use it everywhere!

Potty training iPad app – see these links

Mobile is important to all learners, including adults – picture of older students using mobile apps.

Blackboard MyConnect – makes it easy personalize user experience

Blackboard Mobile Learn

BML 4.0 is coming out later this summer – will provide a more personalized experience.

Polls By Bb does away with clickers. Started out as a mobile feature, but now will work on a tablet or desktop.

http://bbpolls.com — this is a beta product – not ready for prime time – users can’t see the vote responses.

TipTXT – a product created only for mobile devices – Bb supplies to k-12 for free – stop bullying

Blackboard Mobile Central is becoming Blackboard Mosaic:
https://mymosaic.com/

“a revolutionary product that enables you to rapidly implement your evolving mobile strategy on your schedule. Mosaic is the only solution that pairs the value of a web-based management system with the expertise of our Client Solutions Team to help you create the best app for your community – in a matter of hours, not months.”
