BBC News: US media reveals CIA operating drone base in Saudi Arabia

Its recently been released in the media that the “US Central Intelligence Agency has been operating a secret airbase for unmanned drones in Saudi Arabia for the past two years.” It hasn’t been reported until now even though Americans somehow knew. Government officials said they were concerned that if this information got out, damage could be done to counter-terrorism collaboration with Saudi Arabia. The reason for the base in S.A is to hunt for members of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, mostly in Yemen. The exact location of the base has not been released obviously.

Some points in the article that struck me included the four below.

“It was the first strike ordered by the Obama administration, and ended in disaster, with dozens of civilians, including women and children, killed.” Unfortunately, many innocent civilians die in the battle between America and their country and termed “collateral damage”.

“Two other Americans, including Awlaki’s 16-year-old son, have also been killed in US strikes in Yemen, which can reportedly be launched without the permission of the country’s government.” Why on earth are drones allowed to be dropped without even the country’s government knowing?! America would panic if any other country did this, but it is okay for Americans to do this to others as “self-defense”???

“The Saudis see AQAP as a very real threat to their domestic security,” he said. “They are worried about attacks on their energy infrastructure and on the royal family, so it fit their strategy to allow the drone attacks.” This is really selfish of Saudi Arabia. To protect their family and energy sources, they made it possible for drones to be dropped randomly on other countries, killing innocent people and destroying land.

“Critics argue the drone strikes amount to execution without trial and cause many civilian casualties.” Of course, the saying “innocent until proven guilty” doesn’t apply to all. Thousands of civilians suffer for the handful of bad apples found in every bunch.
